Colorful Diamonds
R.J. Hauy, a renowned mineralogist, in 1817 referred to gems as flowers in a mineral garden. He compared diamonds having fancy color with orchids, as they are truly unusual and have a rare natural beauty. Diamonds do not exist in normal colors like green, blue, purple, pink, red, yellow, etc. Instead, they exist in exceptional colors. When diamonds shine in their intense colors, they steal the hearts of millions of people.
The rarest available diamond is the one having a vibrant red color. In fact, the costliest diamond so far has been the one having a red color with a purplish shade. It weighed around 0.95 carats. It was sold during an auction in the year 1987. The buying price was $926000/carat. A red diamond weighing 5.11 carat is reported to have been sold privately for an amount of 8 million dollars.
Colorful diamonds have a high standing because they are scarce and largely attract connoisseurs and gemstone collectors. It is believed that one out of the whole lot of 10,000 customary diamonds comprise fancy colors. Such a diamond exists in shades of green, pink and red. Yellowish and brownish shades are also found.
Red diamond digs a big hole in one’s pocket. So, pink diamonds from ‘Argyle Mines’ (Australia) engraved in platinum are a better choice. Yellow diamonds, when carved between two tiny colorless diamonds, catch the eyes very easily. Blue and purple diamonds are equally stunning. All these varieties, still cannot match the grace of red diamonds.
